NEWS | GACC News

As part of commemorating this year’s United Nation International Anti-Corruption Day, the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC) in partnership with the Ghana Police, Private Enterprise Federation (PEF), National Commission for Civic Education and the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), embarked on nine regional floats.

The float was organised in the Greater Accra (Ada), Volta (Ho), Upper West (Wa), Upper East (Bolgatanga), Northern (Tamale), Brong-Ahafo (Sunyani), Central (Cape Coast), Eastern (Koforidua) and Western region (Takoradi).

Participants of the float included GACC Local Accountability Networks, the Ghana Police Service, representatives of the National Commission for Civic Education, the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice, students and the Private Sector.

This initiative forms part of implementation activities under a funded project by the Open
Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA) under the theme: “Strengthening Accountability and Transparency in the Utilization of Public Resources at the Local Level through Active Citizen Participation to Enhance Quality Service Delivery and Development”.

Participants who embarked on the float walked through the principal streets of the capitals carrying placards with inscriptions such as ‘Corruption Steals from Us’, ‘Teach your children the value of integrity’, ‘Report Corrupt Practices’, ‘Ghana United Against Corruption’ etc, whereas the Police carried placards with specific messages educating citizens on their services and reporting channels ‘ Report police misconduct to PIPS’, ‘Don’t corrupt the police’, ‘ Don’t pay money for bail’, ‘Trust the police’ etc.

According to the lead organisers of the regional floats (GACC), the aim of this float is to encourage and sensitise the public on anticorruption practices and the effect of corruption on their lives.

December 9th is a day set aside every year by the United Nation to create awareness of corruption and what people can do to fight it. The theme for this year’s celebration is “United Against Corruption for Development, Peace and Security.”
