On September 27, 2024, the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC) conducted voter education sessions at St. Augustine’s College and OLA College of Education. The initiative, led by GACC, aimed to equip first-time voters with the essential knowledge to participate in Ghana’s 2024 election. Mrs. Beauty Emefa Narteh, Executive Secretary of GACC, urged the students to respectfully approach their civic duty. “As first-time voters, you hold the power to shape the direction of our country. I encourage you to cast your first vote with integrity and stand firm against any forms of corruption or inducement,” she said. She also reminded the students that voting is a vital part of the democratic process and that every vote has the potential to bring about change.

The voter education campaign is part of the project, “Youth Voice: Activating First-Time Voters for Ghana’s General Elections,” implemented by GACC in collaboration with the Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII), with funding from the US Embassy in Accra. This partnership aims to empower first-time voters with a deeper understanding of the voting process and the importance of electoral integrity.
Mr. Richard Asenso, Electoral Commission Officer from the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assemble, took the opportunity to walk the students through the electoral process, specifically tailored for first-time voters. He highlighted key aspects such as voter registration, what to expect at the polling station, and how to ensure their votes are valid. His informative session gave students a clearer understanding of the procedures and helped to ease any uncertainties surrounding election day.
Ms. Marsita Ferguson, Director of the David & Frances Brain Center for Community Engagement at Baldwin Wallace University, brought a global perspective, stressing the significance of fair and transparent elections in safeguarding democracy. “Elections are a cornerstone of any democracy. It is essential that you, as first-time voters, uphold the highest standards of electoral integrity by voting responsibly and ensuring the fairness of the process,” she noted.

This initiative continues to engage young voters across Ghana, to achieve free, fair, accountable, transparent, and inclusive electoral processes in the 2024 general election, ultimately strengthening democratic governance in the country.
