GACC Rolls Out Trainings to Strengthen Citizen Oversight of the Minerals Development Fund

The Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC) is rolling out a series of trainings to strengthen citizen oversight of the Minerals Development Fund (MDF). The initiative seeks to improve transparency, accountability, and efficiency in the disbursement and use of MDF resources by mining Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs).

Organised in partnership with the Centre for Extractives and Development Africa (CEDA), the Africa Disability Institute (ADI), and the Northern Patriots in Research and Advocacy (NORPRA), with support from the Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP), the training will equip citizen networks in six mining districts, New Abirem, Sefwi Wiawso, Amanfrom Nkwanta, Prestea, Tarkwa, and Kenyasi, with the skills and tools needed to monitor MDF allocations and ensure funds serve their intended purpose.

Participants will be introduced to resource governance frameworks, social accountability mechanisms, and a practical monitoring tool that will enable them to track MDF-funded projects within their districts. These citizen networks, forming the Local Accountability Networks (LANets), are expected to play a critical role in promoting responsive governance and amplifying community voices in mining areas.

By building capacity at the community level, the project aims to accelerate socio-economic development in Ghana’s resource-rich communities and ensure that mineral wealth translates into tangible benefits for local people.
